When I worked with Don and Lee Sax in the Yukon I was very impressed with their unique way of engaging the communities in which they worked. Now that they are in Algoma, in Marathon, I want to pass on these things I have learned from working with them for your interest.
1. Never write off anyone. See their values and avoid all or nothing thinking.
2. Don't adopt secularist thinking. Everyone has to deal with our God.
3. Don't invent something new. Look for what God is already doing in a community, and the people that He is doing it with.
4. Don't judge a community on limited social indicators. Look at their celebration life and their spiritual leadership.
5. Presume people are a lot more open spiritually than you think they are! You won't get anything done in a community if you try to go around the existing spiritual leadership.
6. Work to build a team, as Jesus did. The love is powerful and motivating.
7. Don't pressure or manipulate anyone. Listen for opportunities and just be open.
8. When you see a problem, ask whose problem it is.
9. When you ask for input, be willing to take no for an answer.
10. Wisdom is always around just look for it.
