Engaging the unreached for evangelism: with two case studies

By Bishop Stephen Leung, with the Revs Shihoko Warren & Anson Ann

It is said that conservative Christian churches are good at defending the orthodox biblical faith but fail to engage the secular world; while the liberal churches are good at engaging the world but not keeping the orthodox faith. It is crucial for us to understand the gospel with respect to "form and kerygma" without losing sight of either in proper significance. Truly Jesus Christ is strong at defending the faith while he also actively engages the lost world. We will explore how to engage the unreached in this workshop with sharing 2 case studies for our reference.

Outline
1) Bible teaching: A reflection on how Jesus Christ engages the unreached, by Bishop Stephen Leung
2) Case study: “New Eden” garden ministry, led by the Rev Shihoko Warren
3) Case study: "Thank God, It’s Friday" testimonial ministry, led by the Rev Anson Ann
4) Q & A and interactive discussion

Case studies

New Eden garden ministry (Church of All Nations)

The New Eden garden ministry is key in outreach and evangelism to all nations. It started in 2013 with a strong calling in response to the devastation of the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster. Through engaging in the labour of gardening and enjoying the fruits of the harvest, we are able to reach approximately 100 people from 19 different nationalities with more than 30% non-believers. We see that Creation care is one of the ways to proclaim God’s holistic Gospel to all nations!

Thank God, It’s Friday testimonial ministry (Good Shepherd Vancouver)

Good Shepherd Vancouver has held monthly dinner/testimony gatherings since the beginning of 2014. This outreach ministry, known as TGIF, averages an attendance of 70, about 30 per cent of whom are non-Christians. TGIF’s winsome combination of warm hospitality and bold witness has proven effective in reaching those who would not consider attending Sunday worship.
