Anglican Church of Canada bishops asked to uphold orthodoxy

[originally published at www.anglicanfederation.com]

April 20, 2008

Anglican Essentials Federation (AEF), which represents many orthodox parishioners, clergy and bishops within the Anglican Church of Canada (ACoC), has written Bishops of the Church expressing their deep concerns about the actions of some Bishops acting contrary to Church doctrine.

“Anglican Essentials Federation is disappointed that the House of Bishop's statement did not give any indication that our concerns were addressed,” said the Rev Dr Brett Cane, vice-chair of AEF. “We were further distressed to see that the invitation by the Anglican Network in Canada to resolve differences over property issues by negotiation rather than litigation were not embraced. Continued legal action by the Anglican Church of Canada against other Anglicans is a disgrace to the Gospel and poor stewardship of parishioners' gifts."

Their letter expresses two concerns: “… that theology is being changed by actions, rather than allowing theology to inform actions.” And “…that such actions jeopardize our place within the Anglican Communion.” AEF called upon the Bishops to challenge recent actions which contravene established church teaching on matters of sexuality, expressing concern that the Church’s theology is being eroded “…by unchallenged actions, rather than by intentional discernment and genuinely inclusive theological work.”

Specifically, the letter points to the Bishop of Ottawa’s recent appointment to the position of incumbent of a female priest married to another woman, and the earlier actions of the Bishops of Ottawa, Niagara and Montreal in assenting to votes on the blessing of same-sex civil marriages. These actions all fly in the face of decisions made at the Anglican Church of Canada’s General Synod in Winnipeg last June and of established Anglican and Christian practice and teaching.

Anglican Essentials Federation is a national organization representing orthodox Canadian Anglicans across Canada who continue to stand for orthodox Christianity within the Anglican Church of Canada. It endeavors to be a rallying place for faithful Canadian Anglicans who want to see the Anglican Church of Canada embrace and live by the principles of its own constitution as set forth in the Church’s Solemn Declaration of 1893. The Federation is striving to assist the efforts of all Anglicans in this country who wish to see their church remain in full membership with the global Anglican Communion.
