  The Rev John Coles

John became director of New Wine in 2001 and has seen the organisation grow significantly both in the UK and internationally. He continues to be involved in the development of the New Wine Network of church leaders in the UK and has an increasing role representing New Wine in the wider church community.

New Wine is about “Local churches changing nations”. Its vision is to see churches renewed, strengthened and planted, living out the word of God in every aspect of life, serving God by reaching the lost, broken and poor, and demonstrating the good news of the Kingdom of God to all. As Christians experience the joy of worshipping God, the freedom of following Jesus, and the power of being filled with the Spirit, nations will be changed.

John’s Topics

1. “To know God better” (Eph 1.17) – As we must develop a sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, both by focusing on his revelation of himself to us, through prayer, and by keeping our and minds open to change as He leads.

2. “Not disobedient to this vision from heaven” (Acts 26) – The call to Christian leadership, exemplified by Paul in his testimony to King Agrippa, demands a clear vision of Jesus, the humility to lead as a servant, the call to testify based on our experience (not just theory), and a readiness to go to the lost, rather than wait for them to come to us.

For the clergy day, John intends to speak on the topic of
“Welcoming the presence and work of the Spirit of God”, based on the Apostle Paul’s writing to the Christians in Corinth. Paul says we are transformed into the likeness of Jesus by the ministry of the Spirit. If that’s true we must at some stage stop using words, both in our church liturgies and counselling sessions and make space for the Spirit to work. Our members should expect God to be at work as we meet, newcomers should say “Surely God is in your midst”. The church congregation can be transformed from an audience into the empowered army of God.
