  A New Year - Highlights from 2005
... pdf version

In February, the Primates of the Anglican Communion met at Dromantine and issued a Communiqué effectively suspending the Anglican Church of Canada “for the period leading up to the next Lambeth Conference” which will take place in 2008, while they work through their constitutional processes and “consider their place within the Anglican Communion”. The Anglican Consultative Council upheld the suspension in June, and also voted to add the Primates to the Council so that the Primates' leadership and direction is respected between Primates meetings.

Throughout the year, Bishop Robert Duncan of the Anglican Communion Network (ACN) expanded “Common Cause”, bringing together many churches and ministries in the Anglican tradition from the U.S. and Canada. Although some members have left the Anglican Church of Canada or the Episcopal Church, U.S.A., and others have stayed, we share a common commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ and our orthodox Anglican heritage.

In May, the Anglican Planet (TAP), an independent Anglican newspaper, produced its first edition. The paper and website are a refreshing change from the selective and biased reporting generally found in Canadian newspapers and journals. The paper reports the orthodox view of events happening around the world and it is a great resource. You can find out more about TAP at: www.anglicanplanet.net.

At the Anglican Essentials Canada conference in June, the Network and the Essentials Federation were officially launched and a membership drive was undertaken. To be a “member” of Essentials, you must now take out a membership in either the Network or Federation. You can register online to become a member.

In July, the Council of Anglican Provinces of the Americas and Caribbean (CAPAC) was launched at Nassau, Bahamas, to promote gospel ministry in the Americas and Caribbean. The Episcopal Steering Committee consists of Archbishop Drexel Gomez, Primate of the West Indies, Archbishop Gregory Venables, Primate of the Southern Cone, Bishop Robert Duncan, Moderator of the ACN and Bishop Donald Harvey, Moderator of the Anglican Network in Canada.

In October, the representatives of the Global South, representing 2/3rd of the Anglican Communion met at the Red Sea in Egypt to examine the meaning of the “One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church”. They issued a Communiqué highlighting the foundations of traditional Anglicanism and welcoming the formation of CAPAC and Common Cause. They also endorsed and agreed to provide their full support to the Canadian and U.S. Networks. The Archbishop of Canterbury also publicly confirmed that the Networks are “full members of the Anglican Communion” and he personally welcomed that.

While some people think things are moving too slowly, these highlighted events of the past year have moved at “light speed” in Anglican terms. In fact, there have been many other positive and negative developments not mentioned above. People move at different speeds and we need to be humble, gracious and very prayerful in the next year. Daily, we must put on “the full armor of God”, to withstand the constant spiritual attacks among friends, and our brothers and sisters in Christ. Please pray that we will show God's love in all that we say and do as the spiritual battle rages on this year. Many people expect this to be another “light speed” year with many challenges and I want to thank all of you for your support and prayers in 2006.

In His Service,

Cheryl Chang, Executive Director
