Network membership grows with addition of Vancouver-area parishes
Four more parishes in the Diocese of New Westminster have now formally affiliated with the Anglican Network in Canada. The four parish vestries voted earlier to authorize their Trustees to affiliate with the Anglican Network in Canada “in a manner and at a time that maintains unity with the other parishes of the ACiNW”. The four parishes are:

Church of the Good Shepherd (Vancouver)
St John's Shaughnessy (Vancouver)
St Matthew's (Abbotsford)
St Matthias and St Luke (Vancouver)

These parishes join the Church of the Resurrection in Hope and the Mission of Holy Cross Abbotsford, the first congregations from the diocese of New Westminster to affiliate with ANiC. This brings the total number of member parishes in the ANiC to 14 from across Canada.

General Synod to be shortened
Due to budget constraints, the Anglican Church of Canada has cut the June General Synod in Winnipeg to six days, rather that the usual seven. The schedule for the June 19-25 meetings promises to be busy with the election of a new Primate, the welcoming of Canada's first Aboriginal bishop, decisions on issues related to same-sex blessings and, most importantly, the Anglican Church of Canada's response to the requirements of the Windsor Report.

“Why We Left the Episcopal Church”

Bishop Jefferts Schori to be invited to Primates' meeting in Tanzania
In a letter addressed to the 38 leaders of the self-governing province of the Anglican Communion, the Archbishop of Canterbury stated he intends to invite the Primate of the Episcopal Church (USA) to the Primates' meeting in Tanzania next month. He stated, “I believe it is important that she be given a chance both to hear and to speak and to discuss face to face the problems we are confronting together. We are far too prone to talk about these matters from a distance, without ever having to face the human reality of those from whom we differ. However, given the acute dissension in the Episcopal Church at this point, and the very widespread effects of this in the Communion, I am also proposing to invite two or three other contributors from that Province for a session to take place before the rest of our formal business, in which the situation may be reviewed, and I am currently consulting as to how this is best organised.”

Windsor-initiated covenant being formulated
A committee of 10, appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr. Rowan Williams, are meeting in Nassau, Bahamas from January 15-19 to develop a Covenant as proposed in the Windsor Report. The team, lead by the Primate of the West Indies, the Most Rev. Drexel Gomez, and including the Primate of South-East Asia, the Most Rev. John Chew, will present their preliminary work to the Primates at their meeting in February, then the final document to the Lambeth Conference in 2008.

Church of England evangelicals pressure Archbishop of Canterbury
Lambeth Palace has confirmed that the Archbishop held "preliminary" discussions with Church of England evangelical leaders in mid-December and was taking their issues seriously. The evangelicals, representing about 2000 churches, reportedly told Dr Williams that the crisis over issues such as gay clerics was escalating fast. They are said to have ask Dr Williams to create a parallel - a "flying bishops” - structure that would free them from the interference of liberal bishops.

These evangelicals are estimated to account for one-fifth of the churches in the Church of England, one-third of its active membership and up to 40 per cent of its money.

The group is said to have presented Dr Williams with a “covenant" that states they won't accept the authority of liberal bishops regarded as having abandoned Biblical teaching, that they will support each other in the event any members break their ties with their liberal bishop or cut their voluntary quotas. Furthermore, retired or foreign bishops from abroad could be parachuted into evangelical parishes in defiance of the diocesan bishops.

Panel of Reference issues report on appeal by Diocese of Fort Worth
The Diocese of Fort Worth's appeal to the Archbishop of Canterbury was based on theological dispute with TEC/ECUSA on a number of issues including human sexuality and the ordination of women. The report is generally supportive of the Diocese and calls for action on the part of TEC.
