Primates issue Communiqué after Tanzanian summit
Thank you for praying for the Primates of our Communion as they met in Tanzania and wrestled with difficult issues and sharply divided opinions. The Primates Communiqué, issued following the summit, summarizes their discussions and the decisions they reached. We have studied this document and found much in it that is encouraging. For this we thank God and the faithful Primates.

While Canada’s situation is not explicitly mentioned, the Primates have issued clear criteria for what constitutes an acceptable response to their call for repentance. This document is very important for our Church’s General Synod this June. It is worth reading very carefully. You can view the Communique and the Network’s response.

The Archbishop of Canterbury is quoted as saying that the communiqué “will certainly
fall very short of resolving all the disputes, but will provide a way of moving forward
with dignity.” (Associated Press story, Feb 20 2007)

A number of people have been writing analysis and responses to this Communique – including the Network. Some responses are listed in this newsletter below.

Communiqué sets Anglican world abuzz
“Thick and fast they came at last” – the responses to the Communiqué that is. Some are trying to spin what the Primates said to suit their worldview, others are disappointed, some are angry, and some, like us, are grateful and encouraged.

See what a few are saying:

Primates release draft Covenant
The draft Covenant presented to the Primates – and now released for public comment – is intended to provide a set of principles by which Anglican provinces must abide if they wish to remain full members of the Communion. This draft document still requires a great deal of work and will be revised and presented to the Lambeth Conference in 2008. Some speculate, however, that it could be years before it is finalized.

A peek into the Primates meeting
A fascinating article by George Conger posted on the Living Church website provides a window into the inner sanctum of the Primates’ meeting – the issues, the debates and the compromises on the road to consensus.

Vancouver parish raises $22,000 for project in Tabora, Tanzania
The Church of the Good Shepherd in Vancouver, a primarily Asian parish and a member of the Anglican Network in Canada, recently raised $22,000 for a project in Tabora, Tanzania. This project provides food and water for 7,000 people in the Diocese of Tabora and is sponsored by the Anglican Relief and Development Fund (ARDF). The church raised the money at two events: a children's musical variety show and a concert. You can find out more about ARDF at www.ardf.org.

While in Tanzania for the meeting of the Global South Primates, Rev. Stephen Leung, rector of The Church of the Good Shepherd, together with the rest of the Network delegation, had the privilege of having dinner with the Bishop of the Diocese of Tabora, the Rt. Rev. Sadock Makaya. Bishop Makaya endured a seven-hour bus ride to Dar es Salaam to meet with Stephen and the other three Network delegates. Everyone was encouraged and blessed by the visit and grateful to be able to build personal relationships.

Network Executive Director Cheryl Chang said, “Because of Canadian tax laws, we are planning to register a Canadian branch of ARDF as soon as possible so that Canadians can receive tax-deductible receipts for their donations to these projects.”

We prayed. God answered. Julie is safely home.
Julie Walters’ funeral service was held February 24 at St. Matthew's in Abbotsford with Bishop Donald Harvey officiating. Please continue to pray for the Walters family as they grieve the loss of their beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
