New Year’s greeting from Bishop Don
In the last day, I have been going through my 2007 Daily Journal, filling in
gaps, and generally reflecting over the year that has gone by so rapidly.
The thing that has impressed me most is just how very much we have
accomplished during that period. When I compare some of the early entries,
with so much uncertainty as to how we would journey together, with the
events of Burlington and Abbotsford, I realize just how great have been our
mercies and just how far God has brought us. In all things,to God be the
Glory!
In addition to being New Year's Eve, today in our calendar is the
Commemoration of John Wyclif. I think the Collect says so well what I am
trying to express and I share it with you:
Eternal Word
Grant that as your servant John Wyclif
was fired with zeal for the reform of your Church,
so may we grow in the knowledge and love of your will,
as revealed to us through Holy Scripture
and the Spirit of truth,
and so come to be with You in your heavenly kingdom;
through your incarnate Son, Jesus Christ our Lord . .
May 2008 be a wonderful one for all of us as we continue in our "zeal for
the reform of His Church".
Global orthodox Anglican conference planned
An eight-day conference, known as Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) has been announced for 15-22 June 2008 in
the Holy Land. The organizers – key orthodox Primates and bishops from
around the world – are inviting bishops, clergy and laity from every
province of the Anglican Communion. The event will bring together the
Evangelical and Anglo-Catholic wings of the church in a call to refocus on
Gospel mission based firmly on the “faith once delivered to the saints” and
revealed in Scripture.
The primates and leaders participating in the organizing meeting – held the
second week of December in Nairobi - represented over 30 million of the 55
million active Anglicans in the world. Bishop Donald Harvey was among those
at the organizing meeting.
The GAFCON news release quoted Southern Cone Primate Gregory Venables as saying, “While
there are many calls for shared mission, it clearly must rise from common
shared faith. Our pastoral responsibility to the people that we lead is now
to provide the opportunity to come together around the central and
unchanging tenets of the central and unchanging historic Anglican faith.
Rather than being subject to the continued chaos and compromise that have
dramatically impeded Anglican mission, GAFCON will seek to clarify God’s
call at this time and build a network of cooperation for Global mission.”
Saying that GAFCON is not designed to compete with Lambeth 2008, Archbishop
Peter Jensen describes the rational and purpose of the conference in detail.
Dr Michael Poon has indicated his opposition and asked a number of
questions. The GAFCON website is www.gafcon.org
