Diocese of Montreal votes to jettison Christian teaching, Anglican tradition and global Communion

20 October 2007

The Anglican Network in Canada stands with the thousands of Canadian Anglicans who today are hurt and deeply saddened by the decision made yesterday at the Synod in Montreal – and previously by the Synod in Ottawa (Oct 12/13).

“It grieves us that these two Synods have made decisions which fly in the face of centuries of Christian teaching and the consensus within the Anglican Communion,” says the Right Reverend Donald Harvey, moderator of the Network. “It is clear from these decisions that there is a growing momentum within the Anglican Church of Canada to ignore biblical teaching, disregard the views of the global Church, and even ignore the principles on which the Canadian Church was founded.”

The consequence of proceeding with these decisions to bless civilly married same-sex couples would be to part company with the vast majority of Anglicans worldwide and deepen the divide within the Anglican Church of Canada.

Biblically-faithful Canadian Anglicans are increasingly feeling that they no longer have a home within their denomination. In its rush to discard its heritage and conform to current culture, their church has abandoned them. Ironically, while traditional Anglicans are increasingly marginalized within the Canadian church, we remain at the heart of global and historic Anglican teaching and tradition.
