The Rev Canon Charlie Masters, AEC National Director, was recently interviewed on live TV. He represented AEC and our cause with grace and clarity. If you missed it, you can access the May 17th 100 Huntley Street program online at www.crossroads.ca. (I found it easiest to use RealPlayer software to open the website.)

Archbishop of Canterbury sends invitations to Lambeth 2008
Dr Williams surprised many by sending the first set of Lambeth invitations early, on May 22. Conventional wisdom was that he would wait until after the September 30 deadline for the Episcopal Church to respond to the Primates’ Dar Communiqué requests – as well as for the response by the Canadian General Synod.

Reports are that Dr Williams has included almost all bishops on the invitation list, regardless of doctrinal differences. An invitation reportedly went to New Westminster’s bishop, Michael Ingham, despite his open and continued defiance of the Windsor Report, the Primates requests and established Anglican teaching.

While New Hampshire’s bishop, Gene Robinson was excluded, the secretary general of the communion, Canon Kenneth Kearon, made a point of saying that Dr Williams struggled with this decision. Also excluded from the list of invitees was Bishop Martyn Minns of the Convocation of Anglicans in North America (CANA) who was just installed as the first CANA bishop in Virginia this month by Nigeria’s Primate, Archbishop Peter Akinola.  In addition, Anglican Mission in America (AMiA) bishops – US based bishops consecrated by Primates from outside the US - were excluded.

See: Dr William’s invitation - www.archbishopofcanterbury.org

Archbishop Peter Akinola has already responded, saying that, “since only the first set of invitations had been sent, it is premature to conclude who will be present or absent. However, the withholding of invitation to a Nigerian bishop [Martyn Minns], elected and consecrated by other Nigerian bishops will be viewed as withholding invitation to the entire House of Bishops of the Church of Nigeria.”

Ugandan
Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi stated today that Ugandan bishops will not attend in keeping with their commitment to the Global South’s “The Road to Lambeth” document which stated: “We will definitely not attend any Lambeth Conference to which the violators of the Lambeth Resolution [1.10] are also invited as participants or observers.”

See Uganda’s response and others - www.anglican-mainstream.net; www.globalsouthanglican.org

Also, the Primate of the Southern Cone (South America),
Archbishop Gregory Venables, is reported to have said: "It is a mess. Unless there is a major shift there are going to be significant absences from Lambeth."

General synod preparations reach fever pitch

A new page on the ANiC website lists activities currently planned for General Synod.  If you aren’t going to Winnipeg, but would like to be kept informed, Peter Lillington will be writing a live blog from the floor of General Synod (June 20-25).  We also hope to produce brief daily synopses, distributed by email, for your information and prayer concern.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Nova Scotia Essentials is spearheading a 24/7 online prayer room. They are asking everyone willing to uphold General Synod in prayer to consider joining them online. You can register now on the website so you are ready to participate as General Synod approaches. They’d like people to sign up for “shifts” during General Synod so the prayer vigil will be non-stop during these critical meetings.

Network representatives to be at the upcoming General Synod
Over the last months, the Network has continued to push for clarity from the General Synod in order to help Canadian Anglicans understand exactly where the church is going.  We are at a crossroads; are we going to “walk with” or “walk apart” from the global Anglican Communion? It is time to choose between the more liberal and revisionist agenda of some bishops in the Anglican Church of Canada and the traditional, biblically-faithful position of the majority of the global Communion.

We will have a presence at General Synod, alongside members of the Federation, to answer questions for all those who do not understand the potential (and probable) consequences of the resolutions to be presented at this critical meeting.

If you or any Network-friendly delegates to General Synod would like to arrange a time to meet for prayer and discernment and to discuss any questions you may have, please contact Cheryl Chang, Executive Director of the Network at cchang@anglicannetwork.ca.  Cheryl will be in Winnipeg during the General Synod, along with Bishop Don and other members of the Network Executive. We would really appreciate hearing from you to see how we can assist you at this time.

Zacchaeus Fellowship addresses House of Bishops’ statement
Responding to the recent pastoral statement from the Anglican Church of Canada’s House of Bishops, Zacchaeus Fellowship's Rev Dawn McDonald and Rev. Don Alcock wrote the bishops to protest this latest snub of Zacchaeus’ constituency. They said the Church has “ignored the pastoral needs of people trying to live chastely with same-sex attraction even as it bent over backwards to placate those who have been demanding that the church affirm same-sex relationships.”

Bishop Donald Harvey’s mission in Kenya
Bishop Don arrived in Kenya May 23 where he met with and taught clergy in Nairobi, then traveled to a distant isolated diocese where he worked with Marnie Paterson teaching in a one week clergy school promoting evangelism at the local level. The highlight was to be Pentecost Sunday, when Bishop Don marked the 43rd anniversary of his ordination by preaching at the cathedral in Nairobi.
