Report from Bishop Charles Dorrington, Reformed Episcopal Church
31 May 2014
This past May, two parts of ACNA, the Reformed Episcopal Church and the Anglican Network in Canada, worked together in Cuba to respond to the Missionary District that has been created there. It all began in 2003 when Bishop Charles Dorrington of the REC was approached by a small group in Moa, Cuba, to provide Episcopal oversight for nine people who wanted an REC presence there. Since then, this work has grown into a Mission District of the REC, which has been sanctioned by the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans through the ACNA. The Reformed Episcopal Church of Cuba spans the country from one end to the other, a distance of over 1200 kilometres. It now has a leadership of 22, consisting of 1 Bishop, 2 Presbyters, 10 Deacons, 7 Lay Readers, 1 Deaconess and 1 Missioner, all ministering to 900 souls in 23 locations. The churches range in size from as small as a Mission Extension of 4 to a Parish church of 159.
Bishop Trevor Walters has joined Bishop Charles and his wife Claudia on their last three trips (including this year). He was thrilled by what he saw in 2012 and 2013, and is now in the forefront of trying to encourage ANiC churches to join in a mission connection with Cuban churches, by supporting a church for $100 per month. That amount will cover the salary of the Pastor, and more. On this last trip, these two Bishops joined with Bishop Miguel Uchoa of the Diocese of Recife, Brazil, to consecrate the District Archdeacon, Raul William Suarez, as their first Cuban District Bishop. His consecration was approved by the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans at their last meeting, and a letter was sent to Archbishop Bob Duncan confirming that decision. Bishop William will work in close participation with Bishop Charles, who has been appointed by the REC General Council, as the District's Bishop of Oversight.
Rev'd Barclay Mayo was also present on this last trip, along with other BC ANiC lay members. Barclay is the point-man for ANiC on this project. Bp. Trevor and I invite you to be part of this exciting adventure with The Lord.
